A pretty damning indctment of the coverage of the war in Iraq by a Qatari writer in the "Arab News" of all the places. It provides a very interesting perspective. On a side note, doesn't this man's description of the Arab media remind you of the BBC's coverage of the events?
ArabNews: Arab Media's Conduct During War Indicative of a Deeper Malaise
The Arab media attacked the Iraqi opposition and imposed a collective boycott while satellite stations played host to everyone but the Iraqis who were, after all, the ones most concerned. The Kuwaiti media was the sole exception to this rule. Not one satellite channel had the courage to transmit scenes of welcome to the coalition troops in the liberated cities. Instead, the satellite stations made a great fuss over what they called the crimes of the coalition and ignored the crimes of the regime. The correspondents continued to impose their political points of view on viewers. Not one of the satellite stations, except Kuwait, had the courage to show a tape of the chemical strike against Halabja. It was the same with the air attack of the 1991 uprising in which holy places were hit and hundreds of Shiites were killed and tortured. More than 250,000 Iraqi citizens were killed in the uprising.(link via Instapundit) Posted by shanti at April 21, 2003 10:17 AMNor was their selectivity of topics confined to analysis. It extended even into the presentation of the news. One Arab channel deliberately blamed the weapons and ammunition hidden by Saddam's soldiers who were in civilian clothes in a house. This was shown in its entirety by CNN. The aim of the Arab satellite stations was to suggest that the allies were “savage” in their treatment of civilians. Furthermore, respectable newspapers were not considered to be devout if they did not cover the sorrowful and tragic accident of the journalists who were killed by the coalition forces — in order, they said, to silence Arab satellite stations. Again, the question: Is it possible for the Arab media to be objective?

Talk about a brainwashed population. I’ve been reading the commentary and editorials on Arab News for the past several months… every one of them can be summarized as follows: blame America, blame Israel.
Need more proof? Read their letters to the editor. Almost every one written by a brainwashed Arab or American leftist.
The exception, as Shanti pointed out, seem to be the Qataris. Read the March National Geographic… very interesting reading about Qatar under Sheikh Khalifa.

As the left continues to damn the Bush administration over the war, we have this letter published in The Peninsula (Qatar), written by an Iraqi national:
Why Saddam is worse than Hitler
I am an Iraqi national who migrated to another country. I have left my entire family back in Iraq and am still in fervent hope to take them out of the country. There is an endless babbling over whether the decision of the US-led coalition going into war with Iraq was right or wrong, I, as an Iraqi national, would like to state my opinion about the issue and I am definite that I am writing on behalf of 20 million Iraqis. We ask you the powerful nations to help us free from Saddam Hussein’s iron hands. It is my feeling that the greatest dictators of all times like Stalin and Hitler were far better than Saddam. The former two loved their people while Saddam destroyed his own. I am speaking from my personal experience, but my intent is not to discuss my own sufferings but the sufferings of my fellow countrymen. We, the people of Iraq want to be liberated for the following reasons:
1. Iraq a unified country once, was divided by Saddam’s Hussein. He divided the people into different tribes and made them hate each other. 2. For over 30 years, about one and a half million people had died and more than five million escaped and became refugees in other countries and are continuously suffering all because of Saddam.
3. He had killed over 250,000 Iraqis of Kurdish, Shia’a and Turkmen origin and there are documents to prove it.
4. Iraqi fatalities during the Iran-Iraq war were over 400,000 and during the Kuwait-Iraq war 300,000.
5. When Saddam came to power in 1979 the exchange rate of one Iraqi Dinar was $3.10. At this point in time the exchange rate went down to as low as US Dollar 1 = Iraqi Dinar 2,900. Even a professional economist could not understand how this happened.
That’s what he did to Iraq. The above are only few of the many reasons why the war in Iraq is right in every aspects. The above reasons alone would be enough to bring him to an International tribunal court. He is a super human rights violater.
-Burhan Bayraktar, Doha-Qatar
The lessons of the 20th century regarding appeasement… the evidence produced by Colin Powell, Condi Rice, and the rest of the Bush administration… the first-hand testimonials of Iraqi exiles… none of this is adequate justification for the radical leftists.

This of course, doesn’t really matter tot he radical lefties - they have made up their mind about what they think is good for Iraq and her people. How dare the Iraqis think otherwise - even if they do, they don’t know what they are talking about.
They keep ignoring all the Iraqis pleas for help and will focus on only the negatives of the war. It is a sad day when the Conservatives are more concerned about the liberation of a populace from fascism, while the so-called “liberals” decry the efforts.

Shanti,
Surprising that this topic hasn’t generated much discussion amongst the other readers… maybe you shouldn’t have banned Onkar :-)
But I’d previously mentioned the Arab media brainwashing the local population. Here’s evidence of it, this time from Iran’s IRNA:
Israeli occupation troops murder cameraman
Al-Khalil, April 19, IRNA — Israeli occupation troops on Saturday shot and killed a Palestinian cameraman in Nablus while filming clashes between stone-throwing Palestinian school children and heavily armed Israeli soldiers.
Eyewitnesses said 40-year-old Nazih Darwazah died immediately after he was hit by at least one bullet in the head while filming Israeli soldiers shooting heavily at school children in downtown Nablus.
Palestinian sources said Israeli occupation soldiers used live ammunition as well as rubber-coated bullets against the children. Medical sources said at least eight school boys and girls were injured.
Israeli troops backed by tanks and armored personnel carriers stormed Nablus in early morning hours Saturday amid heavy gunfire. The Israeli forces sought to impose curfew on the city, the largest in the West Bank as tens of thousands of school boys and girls had already gone to their schools.
As soldiers began terrorizing the local population, school children began hurling stones toward Israeli tanks. The soldiers then responded to the stones with automatic gunfire, killing Darwazah and injuring several children.
Darwazah, a father of four children, was working for the Palestinian Television and the Associated Press. He is the 13th journalist to be killed by the Israeli occupation since the outbreak of the Palestinian uprising more than 30 months ago.
KA/NK/AH
End
No, there’s no bias in that. We’re not trying to brainwash you. God’s truth. Everyday, these murderous Zionist forces open fire on innocent Palestinian children. It’s all part of the balanced coverage that we, the media of the Islamic Republic of Iran, provide to our population.
