Marines free 123 from Iraq hellhole - APRIL 16, 2003
The Marines found 123 prisoners, including five women, barely alive in an underground warren of cells and torture chambers.(link via The Command Post and Cypher) Posted by shanti at April 16, 2003 9:06 AMBeing trapped underground probably kept them safe from the bombing of Baghdad by the coalition.
Severely emaciated, some had survived by eating the scabs off their sores. All the men had beards down to their waists, said onlookers.

As InstaPundit said, what the heck were the marines doing saving lives of people. They should have been looking for the stuff gone from the museum.

Cypher, the article seemed very sensible, though I share the writer’s apprehension of how plausible an empire really can be in Iraq. I am really not sure the American public will go for it, and Bush himself denied any interest in nation-building. I think Iraq and its stability are definitely America’s responsibility, so I will wait and see what comes next.
JK, I agree with you - I have nothing but contempt for people for whom an old text is more valuable than a human life. What is the point of preserving relics of humanity if one loses their innate humaneness in that process?
