I thought this must surely be a joke when I heard about this on the talk radio this morning - how stupid is it for the elected representatives of a state to run away and hide like this instead of trying to stand up and fight for whatever it is that they believe in. Such ridiculous things will only increase the public's disgust at the smarmy politicians - This has got to be a big blow to the Democrats in Texas. Shame on you!
Update: Just hear Rep. Burnam of Waco (?) on a radio talkshow - he sounded petulant, whiny and childish - what can I say? ;)
Majority of AWOL lawmakers in Oklahoma
There a group of at least 50 of the 53 missing House Democrats were holed up, just over the state line and out of reach of a Texas trooper manhunt.Posted by shanti at May 13, 2003 12:00 PM"This is not a cowardly act. This takes a great deal of courage and conviction to take steps to make sure democracy prevails," said Rep. Garnet Coleman of Houston, speaking for the exiles.
Members met inside a large conference room at the Ardmore Holiday Inn. Inside, an easel was set up for presentations. Long tables were covered with paperwork, soft drinks and computer equipment. Across the hall, at a Denny's restaurant and Gusher's bar, a live band played late Monday.

You are dead wrong. It is an innovative way to stop one of the many strong arm takeovers the fascist movement in this country is trying to accomplish.

Ok - whatever - I thought elected representatives were answerable to the people who voted them in and had some duties and responsibilities - obviously you don’t.

Kim Du Toit pointed out that crossing state lines avoid arrest is a felony…
I say the Texas state troopers swear out warrants and call the skip tracers.

Chris, I hope so too - it is really irritating when lawmakers act this childishly, even if they are trying to evade the “long arms of the fascist regime” :)

(ooh I like the smileys!)
It’s like truant middle schoolers.
The best quote, from the Houston Chronicle (no free archives) yesterday, had someone saying something like, “sometimes you just have to stand up and be counted, and sometimes the way to do that is not to show up.” what?? I love TXDem logic.

Thanks, Adrianne - I like smilies too.
Texas dems are fighting a losing battle and they know it. I hope the people teach them a lesson.

Nick, I can’t vote and don’t consider myself Democrat or Republican, so there is no hidden agenda here. I think running away to a different state to take away quorum and to avoid voting on issues is childish.
If the Republicans do something this outrageously stupid, I will condemn them too. When the Republicans do their wily maneuvers, they are atleast present in the Congress and fight or lose in person. They don’t run away and hide.

Maybe the Democrats in TX happened to see some of the proceedings of the Indian parliament. This sort of behavior is pretty common out there. But I don’t think the MPs have to hide, they can still loiter outside the building, chewing pan or drinking tea!!!
