Peecee Time

Just got this week's Time, and was flipping through the letters pages, when this thing caught my eye -

Although our May 5 cover depicted a Western face to avoid stigmatizing Asians, some saw the choice as an unwelcome intervention in Mother Nature's affairs.

I could be nit-picking here, but why is it not OK to "stigmatize" Asians, but OK to do the same with "Westerners"? (I liked one of the responses they printed - "Political correctness has morphed into comedy!")

What about the sentiments of Indians who have been hurt because they have been implicitly left out from the category of “Asians” ?

What about our hurt and pain directed at Mother Nature, because she has left us out of the SARS epidemic while she inflicts unglamorous and old-fashioned ailments like the plague on us?

What about the outrage experienced by Muslims who do not believe in the concept of a mother goddess?

Time has a lot to be apologetic about.

Sigh.

We have posters up on the subways in NYC admonishing us not to do this stupid or hazardous thing or that.

They show people doing various stupid or hazardous things on the subway.

Because we can’t insult Blacks or Hispanics by portraying them doing stupid or hazardous things, all the models in the ads are white.

Thus depriving black or Hispanic models of a job.

Plus showing a totally 1950s view of the subway demographics.
