So?

Powell Calls Hamas ‘Enemy of Peace’ and that is news? Key passages for me in the new item were these -
Abbas has said he will not launch a crackdown for fear of triggering a civil war.

After meeting with Powell, he demanded Israel take immediate steps to ease restrictions on Palestinians and “change itself from an enemy into a partner.”

Abbas also said Israel should release thousands of Palestinian detainees, lift travel restrictions, end settlement building and stop demolishing Palestinian houses.
Read the above again carefully, Abbas doesn’t want to rein in the terrorist SOBs of Hamas, but he wants Israel to release all Palestinian prisoners and make umpteen concessions to transform herself into a partner of peace? What crock!

Mr.Abbas, maybe your peoplw would have been a little more oriented towards peace if their textbooks did not call the Jews pigs and apes and idolize as martyrs, suicide bombers who blow up moms and babies and old men and teenagers. May be the general population wouldn’t look up to terrorists so much if the PA wasn’t such a bunch of petty thugs and crooks who funneled billions of dollars into their own accounts and lived in luxury, while their people starved - just a thought you know!

Why do I see the subtle hand of Arafat behind this? For all the praise for Abbas, he is nothing more than a paper tiger, a politico with no political base of his own. As long as the levers of power are still in the hands of Arafat, Abbas is going nowhere. He has been set up to fail. Because, Arafat wants the Israelis coming to him, preferably on their hands and knees.

Personally, Israel should tackle Hamas themselves, and not wait for Arafat.

Absolutely true, Niraj - I think something drastic has to happen - something that will teach the Palestinians that there is no other option but peace. Until that is really, really, explicitly made clear to them, I don’t think anything else will work.

That’s absolutely right.

Either the Palestinians will fight a civil war, or the Israelis will destroy Hamas and enforce peace on their own terms.

I favor the latter. To hell with Europe… and to hell with the “Arab street”.

Arab Street? The same one that rose up to defend Afghanistan and then Iraq? I really don’t think we need to worry much - whatever they are, the Arabs aren’t stupid enough back Palestinians much - they will say stuff, but will not act if they have to.

I also think that the liberation of Iraq and the subsequent stoppage in payments for suicide bombers and the kicking out of Palestinians by Iraqis should atleast give them a clue. Well, all you and I can do is hope, I guess :)
