What do they think they are doing?

I bet some of these people actually call themselves "global peace" protesters or some such. Worthless pieces of flesh, who cannot ever build a thing in their lives but are experts at destroying things other people built.

Demonstrators converge on G-8 summit

THE MOST VIOLENT protests early Sunday were in the Swiss city Lausanne, across Lake Geneva from the G-8 summit site. Demonstrators wearing masks hurled rocks at police and a posh hotel and looted a gas station and a supermarket.

One protester was seriously hurt when he fell from a highway overpass. Lausanne police chief Eric Lehmann said the fall was an accident but demonstrators blamed authorities.

I’m always perplexed by these demonstrators who choose to make a statement during these big summits/meetings, by demonstrating violently. Dunno what is achieved by this?

I agree - they are doing nothing to gain the sympathies of mainstream people and end up marginalizing their own causes with foolish acts like this.

Why do people go to political rallies in India? Because someone transports them in trucks and they end up having a good time in the mela right?

Those protests are basically the same thing happening at a global level.

Ravi, you are right… but the point here, I think, was about having mindless violent protests.

I don’t think people are doing it for fun sake (though Evian and Geneva are excellent tourist spots!) … One explanation can be found in the article by Friedman (listed in Sameer’s blog) …
These guys are generally greenpeace activists (they show up in every Exxon shareholder meeting at Irving) or socialists who are against WTO’s and trade agreements …

Obviously, the effect of globalization has always been one-sided, with the greatest contribution from America.

And did you hear about the verbal terrorist being an ardent supporter (participant?) of this “protest.” I read this morning about how she’s been “looked upon” as some kind of deliverer from the west’s evil axis of capitalism; the same capitalism whose commerical offshoots ensured that she won the Booker.

Heh heh! :smartass:

I wonder if Roy understands the meaning of “irony” :)
