This time they even got an upgrade - they are staying in a Marriott instead of a Holiday Inn, so we hear. Run, D’s, run!
Democrats bolt again – to New Mexico (registration required)AUSTIN - Eleven Senate Democrats bolted the state Monday rather than report for a second special legislative session ordered by Gov. Rick Perry in an increasingly bitter battle over congressional redistricting. In a walkout mirroring the action by House Democrats in May, the senators boycotted the chamber, slipped out of the Capitol and boarded a pair of private jets to Albuquerque, N.M.Posted by shanti at July 29, 2003 11:21 AM

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Chicken Ds cut and run again:
as a fiery liberal that marches when there’s a march that i believe in. they aren’t chicken to me. they’re standing up for what they believe in and not letting a republican controlled house have say so and help themselves to the majority of the seats.
can it be compared to the sit-ins of the 60’s? nah, but close enough for me

But going by the same thing, the last redistricting happened via a lot of gerrymandering by the very same Democrats when they were controlling the House - the Republicans took their blows and didn’t run away. It is their chance now, right?

They have exiled themselves - let them form a “government-in-exile”, and their seats should be filled by the same procedure as had they died.

is it the dems fault that the republicans didn’t take it upon themselves to stop re-districting before? no, so making the claim that because it wasn’t done in the past really isn’t relevant imo.

What is relevant though, v, is that there is a reason why we elect representatives and there is a reason why majority rules - if by this precedent, every time the Democrats tried to do something in a Dem-majority state, the Republicans ran, how are we ever going to get anything done?

To open a lovely can of, well, something isn’t crossing state lines to avoid arrest a Federal crime?

Oh yes, “v” - the Repubs did try, but they did it the way you’re supposed to - by staying and trying to argue the other side to your view.
And it has been done before (one guess which party) after the Civil War: the fleeing criminals (yes, v, they are) were tracked down by Pinkerton agents, brought to the legislature building so a quorum was present, but locked in closets during debate/vote.

John, I did hear suggestions from some legal association or the other after the last “fleeing”, that those House Democrats who were also lawyers, could be disbarred for the offense. Maybe this time they will really do it.
