Is MSNBC AP on drugs?

Look at the title of the article and the content - how do they match?

India blames Muslims for bombing
BOMBAY, India, Aug. 26 - India’s government blamed Muslim militants Tuesday for explosions that shook Bombay a day earlier and accused rival Pakistan of trying to destabilize the country. The attacks killed 50 people and wounded 154, Muslims and Hindus alike. Indian officials stopped short of saying Pakistan had dispatched the bombers, but the comments appeared likely to undermine a fragile peace process between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. They have fought three wars, two over the divided Kashmir province.
and then, look at this piece of information that was completely new to me -
India constitutionally is a secular country that guarantees religious freedom. But in its 55-year history, the country has seen repeated incidents of religious strife that have cost thousands of lives. In the 1940s, riots between Hindus, who make up about 80 percent of the nation, and Muslims resulted in the country being divided into India and Pakistan. The bitterness bred in those times remains. Click a link above to explore some of the worst cases of this violence.
Say what? I thought it was the Partition that had created the riots in the country that lead to the deaths of hundreds and thousands and the displacement of millions. Revisionist history, anyone?
[all emphasis mine]

Umm…how’s that different from when Israel says they blame Palestinians, when they really blame Palestinian militants?

And the riots started sometime before Partition. They were not because of the partition. Partition definitely intensified them, and increased the death toll exponentially. But the article seems factually correct to me.

Posted by: Raj at August 27, 2003 11:19 AM

For the record, this is an AP story republished, not an MSNBC original.

Posted by: MadMan at August 27, 2003 11:25 AM

I disagree, Raj - India never blamed “Muslims” - the government made sure they specified it was the “militants” and more specifically, “Pakistan” to blame. That is completely different from blaming Palestinian militants vs. Palestinians - there are no Palestinians in the Israeli identity, while there are a lot of Indian Muslims. It is inflammatory towards them when the headlines mislead like this.

As for the riots vs. Partition, it is naive to say the riots caused it - it was a lot more complicated than that and it is very simplistic and goes against the grain of India’s secular orgin to imply that Pakistan was separated from India because Hindus and Muslims “could not” get along together - this is what Pakistan claims as her reason to exist and India repudiates.

The media getting its facts wrong? No, that doesn’t happen at all.:tongue3:

True, Niraj - how naive of us to try to find fault with the media

Greetz from Switzerland to India :)

well im not a big friend of the India Goverment anymore, since they decided to build nukes instead of feeding the ppl.

I wich the Indian Goverment would remember more on my Heroe, The most famous indian i know :) mr Ghandi. I wished we was abble to learn more from mister Ghandi.

May peace be with you

Posted by: SmokeALot at August 28, 2003 2:01 AM

I know, i know
it was a race between Pakistan and India.

Its nothing against the ppl, i have great respect from india’s ppl. but im disapointed about Humans generaly, we act like animals. We are to voilent in my eyes, no mather from wich country we come.
Sure voilent is needed sometimes, but we using it to fast. we dont using it as last possibility anymore, it seems to become normal to be voilent.

Thats why im a Ghadi fan :) he took unusual ways but he reached his goal in a peacefull way.

I hope it will be peacefull in Kashmire soon.

SmokeAlot, Do you think Mr. Gandhi would have succeded with his non-violence against Osama bin Laden ?

Posted by: JK at August 28, 2003 12:51 PM

The causes of partition were the egotistical bastards who called themselves respective fathers of the two nations and shrewd british who wanted to piss in the pot of honey before they gave it up.

Posted by: Parag at August 28, 2003 3:09 PM

Ghandi vs UBL?

No i dont think so.
Do you think bombing nations will Kill UBL or bring him more new angry members???

Ghandi used his Brains his clevernes, his will to reach his goal.

We are using “smart” bombs and machineguns. We use pure voilence to reach our goal.

Will this help? will this prevent em from hating us?
we even dont know why they hate us.

Terrorism:
you can kill terrorist, but you cant kill terrorism.
You need to work on this. You have to take away theyr reason why they hate us.

I know Ghandi’s way isnt helping in this case. Bu a combination of Voilence and Cleverness could help us more.

Dont get me wrong, im not on the side of the terrorist. I just think that we are doing the wrong things. Sure something like 9.11 may not happen ever again. But wars like in afghanistan will not help us in that cas. No mather if this war is justified. The kids that lost theyr parents, whyt you think who do they hate? El.Qaida like they should or us like they will do? Yes i think they will hate us, and somehow i can understand him. No mather how justified we see it, he will feel unjustice, cause his parrents where killed by us.

really think Wars like afghanistan will make it easy for UBL to find new terrorist.

I know we dont want to do bad, but that doesnt men we arent doing bad.

But hey Future will show us.
But anyway we have investigate 9.11 first, who helped the terrorists, who gave the money for this. There are so many questions that are not answered.

So i think we shuld not to kill fast others, it could make us to terrorits.

re - the headline, it is not surprising. the american media which looks for simple explanation to insignificant third world problems, always does this.

about the riots, shanti, there were riots throughout the 30s and the 40s. they were the worst during the partition, but the “only partitions caused riots” logic is as wrong as the “only riots caused partition” logic.

Posted by: gaurav at August 29, 2003 3:04 AM

You’re right.

However, after the riots accompanying the Muslim League’s “Direct Action” of 1946, what choice was there other than partition? I mean, after August 1946, could Bengal have survived as a single, entact, Bengal. I’d like to think so, but I have my doubts.

So, in an unintentional way, the author of this article is, partially, correct.

Posted by: Partha Mazumdar at August 29, 2003 3:03 PM

I agree with Partha here a little more than with Gaurav - the way the article words it, Muslims and Hindus could not get along well with each other and rioted, so partition happened. Is that the real story, though? If most of the riots were a reaction to the demand of partition or to demand for partition, can they not be called as a result of the idea of partition instead of the other way around?

Greetings from the US. AP is not our favorite news source either. I think that KJ’s point was that non-violent protests work against an opponent who respects life. It worked against the British because they were sensitive to public opinion - including their own. It would not (and indeed did not) have not worked against a communits regiem, however. Ben Lauden (and other muslim fanatics) is a good example of groups who would “blow away” someone who disagreed with him. Being labled as murderers is an accolade in their book.

How dumb!

Posted by: Shobha at August 30, 2003 4:52 AM

This is downright offensive. It could be a fit case for the MEA to follow up.

Posted by: Mahesh Shantaram at September 1, 2003 2:59 PM

I agree Mahesh - it is offensive, inflammatory and very misleading. Can we take it up with the MEA? What is the MEA?

Posted by: Shanti at September 2, 2003 9:04 AM

MEA: Ministry of External Affairs.
I think that the MEA has better things to do than to chase after individual news agencies and correct biased wordings in their reports. I think it should be left to readers to so.

More than this, I think the MEA should focus on creating awareness of important differences - India is a secular country Pakistan is not, etc.
