29th Bharatheeya Blog Mela

Simple, clean (my excuse? Ia m not as creative as some of our fellow bloggers ;)) and in the spirit of the Carnival of Vanities that inspired us to do this - here we go! We have two categories for the posts today -

1. Political Commentary:

Sandeep wonders if India’s not having had any major revolutions might explain…

Gandalf on the other hand, thinks that BJP and allies are trying to give a communal color to events in the NE…

Suman Palit talks about the long, dead fingers of EU. Really!

Jivha shills for independent Indian media - a highly admirable effort.

Dheeraj has an interesting discussion of the outsourcing of jobs from America to India, Ross Perot and the “giant sucking sound”.

Vinod thinks - “It’s amazing how 2 people can take the same observations, make the same projections, and come to utterly opposite conclusions about the outcome’s desirability.” - he has proof.

Suruj Dutta has a great post commenting on Saudi Arabia’s quest for nuclear weapons and what it could mean for the world in the future (permalinks not working to scroll down to the post “Armageddon : A Universal Right ?” made on 9/18). Niraj has a few interesting thoughts of his own to add to the subject.

2. Culture, society and life in general:

Malavika writes about marital relationships and if a woman has to live with her in-laws…

Austereseeker reviews Rahul Da Cunha’s play, “The Class of 84”.

Mahesh Shantaram wonders if in the pursuit of money and a richer lifestyle, we are ignoring something er, a little more important.

Lazy geek has lots of good info on the “maestro’s” new effort - Thiruvasakam Symphony, a symphony inspired by Tamil spiritual literature.

V has some goods on mechanical devices performing and “performing”…

Kingsley sez that geeks are not nerds and defines each of them for us.

Smorgasbord thinks that building more libraries can be a solution to make better and enrich the lives of ordinary people around the world.

Here ends this week’s effort - more participation and more nominations are always appreciated :) Next week’s mela of course, is going to be hosted by Vinod.

Shanti - nice roll - as always :)

Do you need a volunteer to host the blogmela ? Let me know - i’d love to give it a shot.

Can we rename ‘Bharatheeya Blog Mela’ to just ‘Blog Mela?’ Mela already captures the Indianness and it is catchier to boot ..

BTW, lots of volunteers want to host the Mela but don’t know whom to ask. Even Nilesh (of Nilesh.org) expressed his desire to play host.

Dina, we would love for you to host a Mela - how about the week after this one? That will be great!

Prashant, we actually had a vote on the name during in the early days and this was the name most people had voted for - it was a fairly democratic process :)

Mahesh, anyone wanting to host the Mela can send me an email and we will fix up a date with them :)

I’m now taking submissions for the next Blog Mela.

Send me an email with your nominated article to vinod@vinod.com and I’ll post it up. Make sure you put “Blog Mela” in the subject line so I can filter your message from the sea of spam.

Looking forward to some good material!

Couldn’t help noticing that Malvika’s post is just a cutnpaste of the BBC article. Editorial discretion, please!

Mahesh, there are somethings best dealt over email. Thanks :)

Given that, the BlogMela policy is that no posts are rejected unless they are extremely obscene or dealing with mundane personal stuff - since the post is neither, it was accepted. I would like the Blog Mela hosts to think of themselves as compilers of a set of posts that their owners or readers are proud of. We are not editors and it is really not in the spirit of the Mela to reject any entries. (Vinod and other future hosts, please take note).

No seriously, I think we should think a bit about how the mela should go ahead, now that the concept is, at least tentatively a “success”.

1) The “no personal posts” rule seemed like a good one at that time. The blog world (blogjagat?) seemed awash with personal blogs and allowing personal posts meant that opinionblogging would get washed away in a flood of posts about what the blogger had for breakfast and how much the blogger’s boyfriend sucks. I think that fear no longer holds and perhaps we can relax that rule.

2) No editing please! For 2 reasons - we haven’t reached critical mass yet and secondly sooner or later there will be a big (and pointless) fight over it.

3) Having said that, even now mela editors have the latitude to order the entries, praise one over the other, may be pick a blogger of the week, etc.. Maybe we should make the blog of the week a permanent feature.

Good summary, Ravi - here is what I think about the points:

1. I agree sometimes there is some good writing involved in personal blogs - we might start allowing such posts, while making it clear that they shouldn’t be just plain diary entries, but should have some pt to them.

2. Absolutely agree.

3. I think depending on the individual host’s interest and freetime, “blog of the week” is a good suggestion and might be a suggested section to the Mela - not mandatory.
