Vizag (also known as Waltair and Vishakhapatnam) is the city I was born in and lived for 22 years of my life before I left for the US. It used to be a beautiful town - green hills, blue ocean - when I lived there. I have heard it turned a lot more cosmopolitan and way more populous in the recent days, but looks like the beauty is still there :)
AP bags the honours for best run cities in India - The Economic TimesHyderabad, Vijaywada, Visakhapatnam were joined by Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Indore and Nashik as the winners of the first Crisil Awards for Excellence in Municipal Initiatives.Posted by shanti at September 22, 2003 9:39 AM

Vizag is still a great city. But slowly it is accumulating all the bad aspects of a metro..:(

So I heard, Subhash :(

Notice how most of these well-run cities are in South India.
I always believed that the well-spring of indian civilization and genius lay in the south. Yes, yes, my fellow Bongs will probably eviscerate me with their sharpened teeth for saying this. I believe it to be true, nonetheless. :tongue3:

We will protect you, Suman - no need to worry ;)
It is a sad thing to see Bihar, UP and other such states sink into ignominy under uneducated governments, while the South is making huge strides in developing.

Hi Sanjeev - it feels good to hear from another Vizag resident. It can pretty lonely out here between all the Hederabadis, Tamilians, Kannadigas and Keralites :)

Shanti…I had opportunity to visit Vizag for business and pleasure about 15 yrs ago …enjoyed the beach and great food at
Dolphin resturant…

Wudal, at that point Dolphin was the best restaurant in town. I do miss the beaches still :)

Looks like i got to this blog late.. :o) i was in vizag a year and a half back. the city has changed, for sure… more traffic and people seemed to be getting out more. or was it because i was there from november to january ..festival time? One thing most people visiting Vizag still dont realize is that the best beachspots are away from the city…. there definitely is more to Vizag than just Kailasagiri and RK beach. Well, RK beach is more like a daily hangout place…ohh i miss Vizag. Has anyone gone up to the dolphin’s nose?? beautiful place, i must say… i went up the lighthouse but the guards over there were kind of nutty..no cameras/camcorders allowed, it seems..i still had one in my pocket and taped for a while before they asked me to cut the **it out :o)
hey, more places to eat as well, i forgot to tell ya….

This is my second comment in here.. just thought I’ll update my opinion after going to Vizag a few months. Well, the traffic is amazing, the weather was hot.. global warming, anybody? One good thing about Vizag or any place in India, I guess… Lots of young ppl. I am 25 and I felt kind of old and un-hep in India. The student-log now are more into being-cool than we were.. Is that such a bad thing? Nahh.. makes for good people-watching :o)
And there are even more places to go to now than in Nov 2003. There were a couple of pubs as well..but the security guy said i couldnt go in by myself. :o( I needed to have a partner. But i think business was down that day.. he called out and let me in when i was walking back to my trusted below-40kmph-fast-Chetak
