Sounds like pseudo-science. For instance, this article doesn’t say why someone’s sleeping position is affected by her personality, only that it supposedly is. Remember, correlation is not causality.

I wonder if it is the other way around - we already know that a personality type can affect your body language. This could be a part of it.

Realllly? And how do we know that?

(apart from the fact that when you’re sleeping, you’re not doing anything consciously)

MadMan, our body language changes depending on how we feel and act - which once again is determined most of the time by our personality type. In the same way a clenched or open fist when you are talking to someone determines whether you are being honest or hiding something, your sleep pattern might too.

Exactly my point. What you just said is pseudo-science and bunk. There is no common structure to non-verbal communication, any more than there is a common structure to dream symbolism.

MadMan, the article itself says that even though NLP hasn’t been proven scientifically, “it is more art than science” - that doesn’t exactly lean either way on the truth of it - just says it hasn’t been proven.

Who is claiming it is proven science? This is like reading an astrology prediction and arguing with everybody that it isn’t science - of course, it isn’t - it is all there for fun, just like most other personality tests and such. In my comments above, I was merely suggesting a possiblity - not claiming everything is true - chill out, dude! It is Friday :)

It is better not to make sweeping judgements like this when your knowledge of astrology is limited to reading Linda Goodman or your favorite sun sign in your daily newspaper column.

Oh, I am sorry, Mr. Astrology Professor! Can you please enlighten us who proved astrology as a science before “assuming” that that is all my knowledge is limited to?

Posted by: Shanti at September 19, 2003 4:32 PM

What makes you think it isn’t? I am not an expert on astrology so obviously I can’t prove anything to you. But I do know it all depends on what criteria you lay down for something to be called “Scientific”. If we take your argument at face value, Kepler’s laws of planetary motion would be anti-scientific since he is an astrologist first and has documented the fact that he used astrology as a tool to predict the movement of planets.
