A couple of India neighbors have gone all out for this…really spectacular.

It must be really impressive in India if whole neighborhoods are lit up like this…

I spent the night on my terrace watching fireworks from all across town - and then pigged out on Kaaju Kathlies. Hope you had a nice Deepavali!

David, it is an amazing sight indeed - almost like the Christmas lighting out here in the US :)

Kingsley - don’t talk to me about food right now :( It is going to be atleast another month before I can start eating normally again :)

I was intriguied by this news from CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TRAVEL/10/27/india.diwali/index.html

It says:
In north India, Diwali honors the homecoming of Rama — the most revered Hindu deity — to his capital city of Ayodhya after his victory over the demon king Ravana.
Diwali’s celebration of light began when Rama returned to his kingdom after being exiled in the forest for 14 years and was welcomed home with lights.

I always thought Diwali was due to Krishna’s triumph over Narakasura. Is it celebrated for a different reason ? Can someone clarify ??

L, I think there is a major difference between the way Diwali is celebrated in the North and the South - also, to many people in the North Diwali is the start of the New Year and a time to worship Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth.

Shanti, there are multiple versions of the history itself. Pretty interesting though …
