Good job, Naxalite morons!

Trust a stupid Marxsist ideological group to blast a bomb in the midst of thousands of people milling around owing to the “Brahmotsav”, just so they can kill the one Chief Minister who has actually managed to put Andhra Pradesh’s name on the map. I guess we need to thank God these idiots didn’t manage to do this in the actual temple complex, where hundreds of people would have been injured or killed. I seriously think if these nutjobs are really so worried for the country that they kill, maybe they should actually come out in the open and work with the people instead of ruining their livelihoods by declaring stupid bandhs and inconveniencing them by hiding behind them from police and getting them caught in the cross-fire.

NDTV.com - Andhra CM Naidu injured
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had a miraculous escape today when a landmine explosion hit his convoy near the Tirumala temple complex in Andhra Pradesh. The attack, believed to be a possible assassination attempt on his life, is suspected to be the handiwork of Naxalite groups in the state.

I swear, what stupidos. I doubt if it will the positive trends in Andhra. Here’s hoping Naidu-gaaru gets better soon.

This happens when many newspapers advocate the repeal of POTA. Though it can be misused (and so are many laws), how does one deal with such terrorists. This is a big problem of India, and we need to address this seriously.

I hope so too, Kingsley - I hope he stays CM for a while longer.

L, I agree - tough times call for tough measures. We cannot defang the Government by repealing laws like POTA and expect them to fight an effective battle against extremism.

I also hope he gets well soon .IMO , he should become the PM. so that all India benefits from his talents.

Sounds like a quagmire. Sorry to be so flippant, but Indian commentators are quick to call the US occupation of Iraq a quagmire, but have accepted almost regular bombings by Naxalites as matter of course.

Nevertheless, from what I know, most of the fighting has been handled by the police and para-military units, but when is the central government realize that naxalbri insurgency in AP is a serious problem, that if not addressed, can have a detrimental effect on the state’s growing economy?

Posted by: Niraj at October 1, 2003 10:27 PM

Niraj, I think the central government needs to get involved more. Most of the training for these naxalites come from states like Bihar. I have seen a couple news items in which they were being openly supported by the Marxist politicians/intellectuals like Bidwai, Roy. While the government is still stuck with the Kashmir problem, there are many more serious issues.

Ram, you’re kidding right?

What exactly has Naidu done to impose him on the rest of India? Beyond Hyderabad his record is not something to write home about y’know?

He does manage to armtwist the center into granting goodies for AP because of the BJp’s reliance on his support. And yes, arguably he has done a good job promoting IT in AP but is that enough to run the entire country?

Well Jivha, if we think about a future PM after Vajpayee, one can think of Advani or Sonia Gandhi. There are not many who agree with either of them, Advani because of his strong Hindutva leanings and Sonia because her foreign origin. But personally, I would like to see a younger person (in his/her 50s). I don’t see any reason why Naidu should’nt be considered for the post!

Oh so the criteria for choosing a PM is merely age now is it?

Posted by: Jivha at October 2, 2003 10:45 AM

I never said that, but I would prefer a younger, dynamic person, who is of course qualified! You may list the other possible candidates and we can do a US-style debate!

In fact, presently, a major criteria is age (or experience), since the more older you are, the better are your chances!
