PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) — In a new twist in the battle over same-sex marriage roiling the United States, a county in Oregon has banned all marriages — gay and heterosexual — until the state decides who can and who cannot wed. The last marriage licenses were handed out in Benton County at 4 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. EST) Tuesday. As of Wednesday, officials in the county of 79,000 people will begin telling couples applying for licenses to go elsewhere until the gay marriage debate is settled.(via webguru) Posted by shanti at March 24, 2004 6:15 PM

People SHOULD stop and look at marriage. It offers great things to those fortunate enough to find someone to share their lives with. The benfits intrinsic in marriage are bountiful. The government sweetens the pot by giving these lucky people even more benefits. Why do you suppose the government would offer extra reward to people who are married and not give those benefits to the people who, by chance or choice, struggle to raise children on their own? Are people who walk through life with someone’s hand to hold, more valuable than everyone else?

Single people get as many breaks as do married people, Cheryl. The only extra benefits married people get are those that their spouses have worked and paid for - like social security after death. Married people were actually penalized for filing jointly until this year’s tax cuts, remember?
