Speaking of photos … may I recommend my friend Robert Appleby’s photographs of Dharavi, the April 2002 feature on Digital Journalist.
They are of some of India’s grime, true: but they capture some of the truly vibrant, human spirit of Dharavi and I don’t find them at all degrading for that reason. (Dharavi is very far from being a degrading place, actually). And I say all this only partly because I accompanied him on some of his photo excursions through Dharavi.
Finally, here’s a piece I did on his photos and the journalist Kalpana Sharma’s book “Rediscovering Dharavi.”
