True Words!

Truer words have never been spoken about UN’s role in “helping” the world…
Party time for the UN
After a rather bleak 2004 when the UN found itself squeezed out of Iraq and the lucrative multi-billion-dollar ‘oil for food’ programme, and scandal after scandal of financial malfeasance and worse surfaced, painting the world organisation, to quote a particularly colourful though apt description, as a ‘miasma of corruption beset by inefficiency,’ a ‘Kafkaesque bureaucracy’ that deliberately obfuscates the truth and maintains a conspiracy of silence, it is party time for Kofi Annan and his aid administrators.

All those who have pledged money to help the survivors of Black Sunday, Kofi Annan has been quick to tell them in Jakarta, should pay up and pay up fast. The party has begun, the bills can’t be allowed to pile up.

The UN is a puppet.
A joke, if you will.
It doesn’t even follow it’s own policies.

Oh yeah, that was from Reuters, not some lameass web publication.

True, Radmila.

Ummm… Smart Ass, why exactly should I weep if the UN actually finally decides to police itself? Don’t you think it is kinda pathetic that they have to admit they suck so bad and have such low credibility that they need to let their money be tracked?

While the recent revelations about the oil for food program are alarming, i fear it may be true for any activity where so much money is involved. i dont think its pathetic that they have to admit they have low credibility, i think its a step fwd towards more transperant administration. the US, India and some other countries tried to form an alternate channel for funds, but the US ultimately bowed to UN pressure.

Anya, skimming off almost $10 billion from a program ostensibly designed to help the starving poor of Iraqis not just alarming - it is atrocious. Kojo Annan’s involvement in the process is even more shameful as are the UN’s attempts to obfuscate the truth.

Fact is, the UN is not really capable of doing anything effectively or efficiently anymore. Ask the murdered in Sudan for evidence of that. A taskforce of the four countries mentioned in the article would have been a lot quicker to mobolize with minimal red-tape/beaurocracy and would have helped a lot more people. This is not a time for the UN to be grandstanding.

The fact that UN is open to monitoring of funds shows that it has an open system in place. Regarding the mismanagement of funds, its not unusual for a organization of this size to be lax in some aspects. Overall, its still the best bet the tsunami survivors have.

Regarding mismanagement of money, try to read up (altho this will be painful for you), Clark Kent Ervin’s (ex inspector general of Homeland Security dept) report on how millions of dollars have “disappeared” isince the dept has been formed.

BTW, the investigation of the OFF (oil for food) is over - and it doesnt name Kojo .. so much so for your ad-hominem remarks.

The much vaunted “4 country” formula of Dubya’s folded even before it started - shows the idiocy of the plan.

Why didnt the much-vaunted “Coalition of the asshats” (er, willing i.e) not send troops to Darfur ? They were pretty much convinced that they needed to liberate the Iraqis earlier and didi not depend on the UN for that. Oh yeah, there is possibly no oil in Darfur..

Oh yeah, found a job yet dumbass ? Guess not.

Face it, people like you are a minority (in terms of ideas), kinda reminds one of the last days of the dinosaurs .. going, going, gone ….

Wow! I am just amazed to be “assaulted” by such brainpower as you display. It is easy to act like an asshole when you are anonymous, isn’t it?

As for my job-search, if you actually can read as good as you think you do, you would know I am still working full-time and am earning enough to keep me happy, thank you!

If the US squanders its taxpayers’ money, then the US residents have full-control on how to act on that information. UN is gobbling up the world’s funds is not accountable to anyone. How do you defend that?

So, the investigation on the scandal is over? Who completed it? The UN? I bet they did a good job of it too.

As for the coalition going into Darfur, they already have their hands full in Iraq. Why should they go to Darfur? FYI, They helped out in Haiti - last I checked, there was no oil in Haiti or the Balkans or Afghanistan (I know, you will only bring up Iraq since that is the only country that fits your storyline). I thought the UN was the world’s savior.

As for me being a dinosaur, I should sadly point to you that it is the UNt hat is outdated as are the people who worship it. Sounds a lot like you, doesn’t it?

Ad-hominems are you calling me dumbass - not my calling Kojo out on his “extra-curricular” money from Cotecna that his dad was sad to find out about (look in my archives for link).

Lastly, please don’t call yourself a dog - I think dogs really nice beings. You are not!
