Sweetest sounds in life

Neel is turning out to be one vocal baby - he lets you know with different tones of voice, every mood of his. (I wonder where he could have got this incessant desire to blab from!) He loves listening to people talk to him on the phone - he even responds with appropriate “mmm”s at intervals. When I call him up, he actually recognizes my voice and starts smiling, or so I am told. I called him two days ago from work and our conversation was pretty typical (you know, I go, “Hi Neel!” and he says “mmmmm!”) except for a little while where he didn’t say anything. I was wondering if he was still on the phone when he goes, “mmmmmmaaa, ammmmaa, amma!”. If I hadn’t been at work, that would have had me crying so hard :)

(In Telugu, “amma” means “mother).

Hello Shanti,
when i have read your post i have remembered my sons. I left them in kindergarten when they were 2 and 1, when i left them, my smaller began to cry, and the elder son sid him: “dont cry, dont cry, she ‘ll come back soon” the same time he cried too. i hardly run from a room. my heart was breaking. now they are grown-up. So please wait little more. he ‘ll grow and will love you so much. bye from Azerbaijan.

Hi Konul, the language of motherhood must be universal, eh? That was such a sweet story :)

Hello Shanti! Long time not coming to visit you, and I just learn you have a baby. Belated congratulations, what a sweet cornerstone in your life.

In Vizag, many many mothers bearing tiny babies in their arms have approached us, one hand open for some money, calling us: “Amma, amma.” Heartbreaking, their voices so rusted for such young ladies.

I could go on and on with many Vizag stories, but the point is to thank you for accidentally shedding a light on the meaning of “amma”, which I never knew. Telugu, what a beautiful, beautiful language :o)))

Hi France, thanks :)

In India, it is common to liken those who give you stuff to parents and God in some cases, since you are providing sustenance to them like parents or God.

Thanks about Telugu - I do love the language :)

Ironically Dr. Jayalalitha is also called “Amma” :beam:

JK, I don’t think my “stature” even during the height of pregnancy could have equalled Jayalalitha Amma’s ;)

Hi wudal, right now my son only has a toy car that doesn’t make much noise, but I guess he will start it once we start taking him out a little more in the real car :)

Awww, thats cute :beam:

My mum has tape recordings of me and my sis baby-talking. Heartbreakingly cute, but awefully embarassing now ! :nice:

I am curious. who looks after your son when you are at work? is he in daycare?

Posted by: kavitha at February 4, 2005 1:45 AM

Thanks, Ash - I should record my son a little more so I can embarrass him once he grows up :)

Kavitha, my in-laws were with us till Neel turned 5-months-old - my parents are taking care of him now. They leave when he is 11-months-old, which is when Neel will probably go to daycare.
