This is too sad

This is what we do to sportspeople with real talent and then wonder why it is that a country with over a billion people sucks so bad at winning anything in the Olympics and other world arenas.

Penury makes player sell medals! : HTTabloid.com
Penury has driven a woman powerlifter from Orissa to sell all the medals she has won in national and international meets.

The 29-year-old Mandakini Mahanta, a resident of Goladihi village in Mayurbhanj district, won a gold medal in the Asian senior powerlifting championship in Kerala in May.

“I have no option but to sell my valuable medals,” Mandakini, who is single, said.

She was selected for an international meet in London that started on Monday. But due to lack of finances, she could not participate.
How sad is it that at a time when worthless, corrupt politicians hoard crores of rupees in their vaults, a talented woman has to sell her awards and medals to try to finance her trip to an international sports competetion? I cannot believe there wasn’t a single organization or sponsor to help the poor woman bring pride to the country. I am just flabbergasted.

update: Of course, we cannot be completely satisfied with just stopping aspiring athletes. We now have to issue a fatwa against rising tennis star Sania Mirza for the dastardly act of - get this - wearing short skirts while playing the game. Some parodies just write themselves I think - you just cannot makeup crap anymore when reality is so out there! They are even proposing an alternative to her dress…

The fatwa - in effect, a demand that she cover up - was issued by a senior cleric of the Sunni Ulema Board, a little-known group. Similar fatwas have been issued against Mirza, who comes from a devout Muslim family, but none has ever gained popular support among India’s 130 million Muslims.

“The dress she wears on the tennis courts…leaves nothing to the imagination,” Haseeb-ul-hasan Siddiqui told The Hindustan Times. “She will undoubtedly be a corrupting influence.”

He said she should follow the example of Iranian women who wore long tunics and headscarves to play in the Asian Badminton Championships.

Shanti,

The story of our athletes living in poverty is not new - I remember reading a similar article in several Indian magazines a long, long time ago.

That was one of the reasons I hated (and continue to) hate Cricket - it’s the game that’s killed every other sport in the country. We siphon so much of money towards that one game, at the expense of several other much more talented players in other sports.

The whole Sania Mirza thing - I can say only one thing - wow. That’s just priceless.

Civilization and radical Islam - only one can exist at any point of time. Sometimes, I really wish mah homie Bush would nuke the hell out of all of these guys once and for all and eliminate them before it gets any worse.

Hope springs eternal.

The VC of Anna University has decided to put in place new dress code for the girl students. Girls are to wear only salwar Kammeez….Not sure why he did not propose purdhas ??
http://www.hindu.com/mag/2005/09/18/stories/2005091800150200.htm

The University is funded by tax payers to teach technology to students and not waste time to be moral police.

regarding Mirzaskirt issue…
what would be the reaction of bloggers here if some guy starts playing tennis with no clothes on? even better, a girl starts playing in nude or going to school in nude to learn computers? it is quite possible, Pygmy women/men even today roam nude in jungles collecting food, running, swimmining in birth suit without any problems..
so any thoughts on that? should people be allowed if they choose to play nude?
if not then who draws the line and where? i am just asking questions, so answer it sincerely w/o invoking stupidity of argument etc….

Metlin, if we only poured 1/10 as much money as we did into cricket into other sports, we might not be as far behind the rest of the world as it seems.

ChinaMan, fundamentalism of every kind needs to refuted. Thanks for th elink.

Chetan, I don’t want people walking around naked, period! Pygmy women do things naked - I take a shower naked - doesn’t mean that we morph the dress code of one region or one part of your home into the dress code for the entire world.

A swimsuit is great for swimming - a tennis skirt is not - that doesn’t mean you are allowed to wear your swimsuit or your tennis skirt to work - unless you are a professional swimmer or a tennis player, that is.

Hi Chetan
Being nude is really cool. Highly advisable.

But, it has its practical problems if you want to make it your everyday style. Some practical problems are that your penis in its “usual” dangling postion could get caught somewhere OR some insects could decide to lay eggs in the damp parts of your body OR etc etc (use your imagination).

I would suggest minimum underwear is required for protection of our precious manliness and so in the case of women their private parts.

Even now in our villages, men would be working wearing only their underwear. Until 50 years ago, even our South Indian women would be topless in the same farms.

If someone wants to wear more clothes above their undewear, that is upto them. We can not restrict or play moral police on someone who flaunts and exhibits more clothers on their body. Althoug, I feel they are crude exhbitionsist who want to flaunt their wealth in the form of clothes.

cheers

Sensible protection.
