Ram Gopal Verma's disaster movie

…also known as a remake of “Sholay”. Take a look at the cast he has selected for his remake of Sholay - rediff.com: Sholay, recast - and then tell me that the man hasn’t been listening to his own PR for a bit too long. Seriously, trying to remake a classic of the likes of “Sholay” itself is no mean task without the director trying to add “his own touch”, just for the sake of it. There is no reason to cast Amitabh as Gabbar Singh - none whatsoever expect Varma’s hubris and his belief that he can somehow make the classic in his own image. It is not going to work and guess what, he will sit there and blame us unenlightened folks for failing to see his greatness. Bah!

Not watching if it’s a bland remake. If he makes it into a Sholay meets Run kind of movie, with an urban villain (which would make sense if you’re putting the Big B in that role) rather than a dacoit in the hills then it might be passable, although I would expect a screenplay of the quality of let’s say… Satya for instance.

Remakes are not always bad. After seeing the new versions of ‘Ocean’s eleven’ and ‘the thomas crown affair’, I couldn’t watch even 15 minutes of the older versions of those. Then, there is always bad examples like ‘psycho’. Hope RGV’s Sholay falls into the first category.

Sankar and Parag, I hope it is definitely not a slavish remake but a different take on the original - that would be kinda cool. It is just that the casting seemed to be just a trick to deliberately set the movie apart for me.

As for Sholay with an urban villain, isn’t that what “Karma” was? :)

“Karma”?!!

Sankar, Karma is very similar to Sholay in theme - it has the criminal guys that a jailer tries to use for his revenge - Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Naseeruddin Shah with Dileep Kumar playing the jailer. The jailer’s family is slaughtered by the villain, Anupam Kher. Anil Kappor is sort of Veeru-like while Jackie is like Veeru, serious.

It is definitely not as bad a decision as the one to remake James, that too with the same cast.

first of all,i contest this claim by you that sholay is a classic.
classic:old work but still enduring one.
just because sholay gets repeated mentions in advertisements does not mean ‘popular culture’ becomes a ‘classic’.
if you browse your archives you have written blogs abt guy de mopaussant and chekhov.
now you have stooped to the level of writing blogs about rgv, google mapping and so on (probably to attract more traffic to your site).if you dont write new blogs abt classics in films and literature ,you will find you have lost a faithful blog reader of yours.
