Relaxing with dead dictators - updated

Relaxing with dead dictators, especially genocidal ones - if that is your idea of a fun evening, look no further…

It’s like if “The Producers” opened an eatery - Yahoo! News
“This place is not about wars or crimes, but where people come to relax and enjoy a meal,” said restaurant manager Fatima Kabani, adding that they were planning to turn the eatery’s name into a brand with more branches in Mumbai.

I love how “Fatima” (sounds Muslim - what are the odds the next eatery chain she manages features huge images of Mohammed or the crusaders?) doesn’t understand why her little eatery called “Hitler’s Cross” should be about war and crimes and other icky stuff instead of relaxed and hip dining - the stuff one always associates with Hitler. I mean, they only serve “Halal” meat here, y’all! Jewish meat is available in owner Punit Shablok’s next restaurant, “The Gas Chamber”.

Update: In case you are wondering what kind of people let restaurants like this get into business, here is an email on the Desicritics group from Anil -
I am at loss , who exactly is stupid here? Is it the insensitive jerks who named name a restaurant after Hitler(mind you it is not illegal under Indian law to do so) or the reactionary Jews and guilt ridden Germans who are making a mountain out of a molehill?
I quoted the email in its entirety, so there is no question of context. What disgusts me is that somehow Jews are reactionary for complaining that people don’t idolize a nutcase who tried to exterminate their entire race? How very PC!

Hitler was vegetarian! So if this is restaurant is serious (I doubt) then it would have only veggi food. One day Indians are upset for banning pesticide-pepsi, they next they think there country is too liberal becausing some weired mind sets up a hitler eatery.

As long as people like Bal Thackeray call hitler a great politician I’m not surprised to see this happen in India.

damn! no.. my mind just cant bend as far as these guys did..

i hope they don’t smack their heads when they read your “Gas Chamber” line and go.. hell, we should’ve thought of thaat!

Uhm yeah the restaurant is wrong on all levels. I think the owner is an idiot for his views on hitler and cuisine .. or a genius because i’ve seen his restaurant get marketing on TV in the us

You did quote me out of context. I was not making a statement. I was posing a question to the previous commentator who said “It does not get stupider than this” as to which part of the whole story did he find stupid?

Posted by: Anil at August 24, 2006 10:48 AM

Anil, my point of contention was where you called the Jews “reactionary” and said they were making a mountain out of a molehill. Did that meaning change at all even after adding your explanation about the email being a question?

Oh, I forgot to add, as much as I loathe Hitler and all the things he stood for, I still support the right of the Dumbasses who own the restaurant to name it after him. The whole concept of a free society is that everybody has the right to express their views no matter how insensitive/offensive those views may be.

If this disgusts you, well, tough luck.

The thing is Anil, there is definitely one’s right to make a fool of one’s self or be insensitive to someone - on the other hand, there is also the other’s right to criticize the fool. Just because someone can do something doesn’t mean they should do it. It isn’t like the Government of India has really stellar credentials in the department of free speech - if they can books and movies based on some religion or the other’s grievances, then they are hypocrites for not respecting the wishes of Jewish people.

Yes the meaning does change. There are only two ways the whole affair can be considered as stupid

1. By agreeing that the owners were insensitive or
2. that the Jews over reacted.

I just wanted to know which one of the above according to the commentator to say that “It does not get stupider than this”.

Posted by: Anil at August 24, 2006 11:02 AM

Well, you see you clearly believe or atleast imply that Jews overreacted and were being stupid - I don’t think they overreacted considering the madman tried to exterminate them and largely succeeded. I am alarmed that people can call something that serious an overreaction.

Posted by: shanti Author Profile Page at August 24, 2006 11:09 AM

Again, you are assuming my motives. I did not imply anything. As I explained I wanted to know the views of some one who pointed to an article and said that it was stupid. He did not say why it was stupid and I wanted to know. That’s all.

You are misrepresenting my views and portraying me in your article as an insensitive human being.

Posted by: Anil at August 24, 2006 11:22 AM

Anil, you definitely want to know who Atanu was calling stupid, but you are saying there are two sides that are obviously stupid, which is the reason why you want to know who Atanu is talking about. I understand from your email that you think both sides are stupid - where I disagree with you is in that I don’t think the reaction of the Jews is stupid.
