at October 19, 2006 7:12 PMI am appalled by this - Althouse: “Lefty Blogger Outs Senator As Gay.”. Seriously, how dare someone open up another person’s private life to public scrutiny just because that person might be gay? I have worked with and been friends with enough gay people to understand why everyone might not want their lifestyle publicized. Not everyone is comfortable talking about their sexlife with total strangers - something that is unfortunately a byproduct of anyone coming out of the closet these days.
This was an extremely disgusting thing to do - I wonder if someone will stop and think, what now? Is it OK to publicize someone’s abortion? a rape? childhood-abuse history? I shudder to consider that!

Don’t you think Republicans brought this upon themselves ? Not so long ago they went to town with exactly similar kind of sexual politics - or is it that it is okay to play the ‘straight sex’ card and not the gay one. Hmmmm…….
Here in North Carolina, one Republican candidate suggested that his Democrat opponent was gay simply because the latter did not have any children. Conveniently forgotten was the fact that the Democratic candidate’s wife had hysterectomy many years ago .
But of course, we all know, the actions by Republicans are all being done to promote “family values”, while Democrats and leftys are only out to destroy America with their sexual agenda.

Jatayu, the case of the Republicans you mentioned is as disgusting to me as was the case I blogged about.
As for straight and gay, I think the difference is that straight sex is pretty much accepted, while outing someone is a way of branding that person as unacceptable to the public. I find that very discriminating towards gays who feel enough of it as it is.
